Alex’s use of the word ‘alive’ had Summer’s sinking feeling grow into a burning pit in her stomach. She still hadn’t heard from Vanessa.

She went back to her room and climbed on the now too empty and too big bed. Then she called Vanessa…twice. The second time, she left a message. “I can’t remember the last time I talked to voicemail. It’s been a while, Ness. I’m worried. Please call me.”

Then she opened up every social media app she could think of and sent a similar version of the same plea on each one. While doing so, she also checked the ones that show the last time someone’s logged in. None of them said anything under two days. Forty-eight hours. She had to be dead.

Summer called Sheriff Brady.

“You change your mind?” Brady asked, skipping the pleasantries.

“I have a problem,” she replied, also skipping pleasantries and ignoring his question. She realized in that moment that she’d never considered calling him about the near kidnapping and shook her head. Had this sort of thing really become normal for her?

“What’s that?”

“I have a friend I can’t reach. Vanessa Fischer. She hasn’t responded in a week. And she hasn’t logged into her socials in at least two of those days. That’s not normal. I’m very worried.”

“Maybe she made a New Year’s Resolution to quit all that stuff.”

Summer shook her head, though Brady couldn’t see her. “Social media is her job. She can’t quit.”

Brady laughed; one of those ‘kids these days’ huffs.

“Is that enough to report her missing? Or do a welfare check or something?”

“Maybe. But is there a reason to be concerned? I mean, where is she?”

“She lives in Orlando.”

“And?”

“And I’m just worried, alright?”

“What aren’t you telling me? Was she messed up with that stuff in Atlanta?”

“No!” Summer snapped. “Can’t I just be worried about my friend?”

“I’ll see what I can do. Vanessa Fischer. Orlando. Got it. And Ms. Snow, have you given more thought to-”

Summer hung up.

All she’d done the past few days was give all her thoughts to Harding. And DeVilla. And Sam King. She felt like she was losing her mind.

Against her better judgment, she pulled up the latest news article on Mr. King’s death. Police were still searching for the woman in the blue dress. She swiped over to her pictures and scanned the crowd for any sign of blue.

There, in the background of two pictures, was a blue sparkle. She couldn’t make out what it was, other than it was clearly fabric. And the woman seemed to be chatting up a boy in uniform nearly half her age.

Summer debated calling Brady again, but she needed him to focus on Vanessa. Besides, she was supposed to be leaving the case alone.

Before putting her phone away for good, she gave in and called Evan instead.

“Summer! I’ve been worried sick! Alex told me what happened.”

“I’m fine.”

“You can tell me if something’s going on. I’m here to help. I want to help, if you’ll just let me.”

Summer stifled her groan. “How many times have we been over this?”

“You don’t need a man to keep you safe.
