Alexâs use of the word âaliveâ had Summerâs sinking feeling grow into a burning pit in her stomach. She still hadnât heard from Vanessa.
She went back to her room and climbed on the now too empty and too big bed. Then she called Vanessaâ¦twice. The second time, she left a message. âI canât remember the last time I talked to voicemail. Itâs been a while, Ness. Iâm worried. Please call me.â
Then she opened up every social media app she could think of and sent a similar version of the same plea on each one. While doing so, she also checked the ones that show the last time someoneâs logged in. None of them said anything under two days. Forty-eight hours. She had to be dead.
Summer called Sheriff Brady.
âYou change your mind?â Brady asked, skipping the pleasantries.
âI have a problem,â she replied, also skipping pleasantries and ignoring his question. She realized in that moment that sheâd never considered calling him about the near kidnapping and shook her head. Had this sort of thing really become normal for her?
âWhatâs that?â
âI have a friend I canât reach. Vanessa Fischer. She hasnât responded in a week. And she hasnât logged into her socials in at least two of those days. Thatâs not normal. Iâm very worried.â
âMaybe she made a New Yearâs Resolution to quit all that stuff.â
Summer shook her head, though Brady couldnât see her. âSocial media is her job. She canât quit.â
Brady laughed; one of those âkids these daysâ huffs.
âIs that enough to report her missing? Or do a welfare check or something?â
âMaybe. But is there a reason to be concerned? I mean, where is she?â
âShe lives in Orlando.â
âAnd?â
âAnd Iâm just worried, alright?â
âWhat arenât you telling me? Was she messed up with that stuff in Atlanta?â
âNo!â Summer snapped. âCanât I just be worried about my friend?â
âIâll see what I can do. Vanessa Fischer. Orlando. Got it. And Ms. Snow, have you given more thought to-â
Summer hung up.
All sheâd done the past few days was give all her thoughts to Harding. And DeVilla. And Sam King. She felt like she was losing her mind.
Against her better judgment, she pulled up the latest news article on Mr. Kingâs death. Police were still searching for the woman in the blue dress. She swiped over to her pictures and scanned the crowd for any sign of blue.
There, in the background of two pictures, was a blue sparkle. She couldnât make out what it was, other than it was clearly fabric. And the woman seemed to be chatting up a boy in uniform nearly half her age.
Summer debated calling Brady again, but she needed him to focus on Vanessa. Besides, she was supposed to be leaving the case alone.
Before putting her phone away for good, she gave in and called Evan instead.
âSummer! Iâve been worried sick! Alex told me what happened.â
âIâm fine.â
âYou can tell me if somethingâs going on. Iâm here to help. I want to help, if youâll just let me.â
Summer stifled her groan. âHow many times have we been over this?â
âYou donât need a man to keep you safe.
